I said to myself, "You can write this later, go take your shower." and then I said, "you might forget, so write it now."

Julius was drawn out of his dream by a poke to the shoulder, the vibrant colours of an unknown planet melting away into the realm of the forgotten as he blinked himself awake. The room was dark but for the far-off glow of a streetlamp, lending just enough light that he could see the murky curves of Kay's face as she stared at him. Through a yawn, he asked, "What is it, honey?"

"I just had the strangest dream." One of her hands clasped his as she spoke. "The baby disappeared."

She didn't sound worried to his ears, but he could not think of any reason she'd share this with him, if not concern. Reaching out with his free hand, Julius slid it over the curve of her stomach, growing more prominent each week. "Well, he doesn't seem to have gone anywhere. I think we can blame dinner and forget about it."

This comfort did nothing to dissuade her, as far as he could tell. Making no move to curl back up against him and fall asleep, she replied, "It--and I couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl, so none of this he stuff, Jules--" and he could tell from her voice she was grinning at him. "It waved to me, and it disappeared. Why do you think a child would do that? It must have been four or five, not really a baby at all. But it was our baby, I knew that."

Perhaps he simply wasn't quite awake enough for this game, for Julius wasn't at all sure why they were still discussing this. He seized upon the detail that interested him most. "What did he--it--look like?"

"Like you," and the smile was still in her voice. Julius felt one spreading over his own face as she squeezed his hand. "And like me. It had the darkest eyes I've ever seen, darker than mine--but why, d'you think?"

"Well, we were involved in its coming about," he joked, and received a light swat in return, which he supposed he deserved. Not much more seriously, he answered, "I don't know why, Kay, perhaps it built a time machine and left rather than receive a spanking. Why do you ask?"

She didn't answer for a moment or two. "I think we could make a story out of it," she finally said, "don't you think?"

Once she said it, it seemed quite obvious, and moreover, quite appealing. "Yes, I think so," he agreed. Had they not been up late working on a different tale, perhaps it would have come to him more quickly. Between a long day previous and only a few hours' sleep to show for it, though, he wondered that he could think at all, at the moment. "Should we start now or in the morning?"

"Now," she said promptly, but perhaps remembering that she was the one with energy for two that evening, added, "now for notes, anyway. We can start writing tomorrow."

"Sounds fine," he replied, cringing against the light when she turned on her bedside lamp. Leaning in close to her, he watched her write out disappearing child across the top of her steno pad. "Did you like the time travel idea? Because I like the time travel idea..."

I KNOW RIGHT. I should read more of their stories so I can write more stories about them writing stories. >>

And thank you, I am really quite satisfied with it. You can do what you like with your stories, but I am decided that I'll post mine on the ao3 once I finish that hideously long first meeting.

Which is totally understandable; I'd feel the same way about arts.
