Feb. 21st, 2012 09:57 pm"It's not goodbye, Mom," Amanda mumbles in the middle of her mother's embrace, her face pressed into her mother's shoulder. "I promise, they have screens on Vulcan."
"It's not the same as having you here." Her mother's voice has a waver in it, one that promises plenty of tears within the next five minutes. "Promise you'll visit."
"As often as I can."
-
Amanda settles in close to Sarek, who is gracing the ceiling of her bedroom with the barest curve of a smile, and hooks a leg around one of his. "I think congratulations are in order."
He glances up at her, his sharp brows drawing just slightly together. She's seen the expression before--it's amazing, really, how he regained all the tension of his jaw in miliseconds flat when she spoke just then. For those brief moments, he'd looked more relaxed than she'd ever seen him, enough so that she nearly regrets saying anything. At least until he replies, his voice warm, she does. "Do you think so?"
"I knew you were smart, but I didn't realize you learned that quickly," she tells him, unable to keep from grinning as she speaks. It's mostly endorphins, she knows, but the company she's keeping has to be part of it, too. "There's an entire genre of manuals devoted to having sex with humans. Plenty of our men haven't yet mastered it."
Sarek gives her a surprised look, which she supposes she should have expected. Sometimes her jokes fall completely flat. But that can't quite be it, because she's tempted to call his expression sly when he raises one of his eyebrows. "I will accept that praise only if I can return it."
"Oh?" Her smile grows wider.
Sarek tips his head in close, until his lips are brushing her temple. "Vulcans have those books, too."

"Feel that heat!" Amanda exclaimed as they walked out of the climate-controlled ship onto the sunbaked ground. Each step seemed heavier than the one before--the change of gravity took a few minutes to get used to on any planet, but it was particularly unflattering on Vulcan. However light the crepe gowns currently in fashion might be, Amanda felt like an elephant clodding around until her body adjusted. "I always forget it until I come back."
Sarek glanced down at her, an eyebrow raised. He wouldn't crack a smile now, not when they were technically in public, but she could read the amusement hiding in his expression easily enough. He left all the clues there for her in the way he held his mouth and tilted his head toward hers. "I trust it is not too hot for you, my wife."
"Oh, no." She patted his forearm, and they strode toward the gates of their new home. The breeze ruffled the veil shading her hair, brushing lightly over her bare neck. "Once you've felt the sun on Vulcan, you'd be crazy to want anything else instead."

Dec. 5th, 2011 09:45 pmOn days when he could think of few things less appealing than going home to be needled by his older brothers, Will was taken with visiting the menagerie. Near the lake's shore on the castle grounds stood a row of ornate cages holding magical creatures, the likes of which he'd never seen elsewhere.
Will sometimes bought a carrot for the centaur, but on that particular afternoon, he hadn't a penny to pay. He smiled, a bit sadly, at the creature as it cantered up to the gate, and shook his head. "Next time."
The centaur stared blankly at him for a moment, pawing the ground, then dashed off again when it became clear that no carrot would appear. Will watched it cavorting down towards the rocky bank of the lake before he continued on towards the other animals.
He walked past the gryphon in its golden cage, lost in the unsettling thought that he was to be sent to a boarding school in a matter of days. So distracted was he that as he approached the phoenix, stretching its wings experimentally on a tree branch, Will walked directly into someone else.
"Oh, I'm sorry," he began, his voice dying away on the last syllable as he realized who he had nearly knocked to the ground. "Your--your Highness, I didn't mean to--"
The heir apparent of Frell, Prince Tenzing Tharkay (someday to be King Tenzing Tharkay I), rolled his eyes and raised a hand to silence Will. "I'm quite sure you didn't. Don't trouble yourself."
"All right," Will agreed. The concern melted from his thoughts like snow in the spring, and he smiled at the prince. When the prince didn't smile back, Will turned his attention toward the phoenix before them. "It's a beautiful bird."
"Yes," agreed Prince Tharkay, his voice growing warmer. "I am quite fond of birds."
