"I'd better see if Nick's gotten himself in trouble," Frances said lightly, letting go of Alice's hand.

She gave Frances a smile, drawing her hand back. "Oh--yes. He and Sean are probably up to no good."

"That's what we get for leaving the two of them alone for ten minutes." With a laugh, Frances took Alice by the shoulders and drew her in for an airy kiss to each cheek. Alice followed suit, the bare skin of Frances' arms cool beneath her fingertips. When their jaws bumped in a show of mere friendliness, she heard Frances murmur, "After."

Without time to respond with a "Yes," Alice took a step back in time with Frances and inclined her head slightly. The light pouring onto the balcony from the warmly lit rooms within drew a glow from Frances' skin, the angles of her collarbone and shoulders softened. A few tendrils of hair had slipped from her chignon and now curved in an echo of her neck.

Frances' lips curled up at the corner as she cast her own eyes down towards the point of Alice's gaze. "
