Because sometimes you don't want to spend all of your lunch hour trying to convince people on the internets not to refer to people as transgenders, gee willikers.
"Oh, who's this?" Darlene asked, bending down to get a better look at Philippa. Having wrapped one arm firmly around Julius' leg, Philippa stared back up silently, her thumb in her mouth and her dark hair beginning to fall out of one pigtail, curling around her face.
"This is our daughter, Philippa," Kay answered. "Philippa, say hello to Miss Darlene."
When Philippa did no such thing, only continued to suck at her thumb (that was a habit they were going to have to break one of these days, Kay thought with an inward sigh), Darlene laughed. "Nice to meet you, Philippa! Gee, that's a long name."
"After Lovecraft," Julius said, by way of explanation. At the sound of her father's voice, Philippa pulled the thumb out of her mouth and held up her arms to be picked up. "Yes, darling, I've got you."
Darlene wrinkled her nose, a toothy grin still on her face. "Ooh, Lovecraft's scary. She seems like a real nice little girl, though--looks just like her daddy."
That was Kay's cue to disagree with the nicest smile she could muster, as it always was. "Oh, I dunno. She definitely got my bug-eyes, poor thing."
"...Oh, you're right!" Darlene said, after another moment or two of squinting at Philippa's face. "I mean--you got perfectly nice eyes, Kay, but hers're just like yours. Does she like candy?"
"A bit young for it, I should think." Julius shifted Philippa in his arms, giving Darlene the most charming of apologetic smiles. "Philippa, why don't we say hello to Mr. Albert and let Mummy talk to her friend in peace?"
I am going to kill Julius, Kay thought as she watched him speed away from the conversation, then turned her attention back to Darlene. Drawing up the politest smile she could, she asked, "Are you doing anything fun this weekend, Darlene?"
