Second try at a Temrer story, first I've put up here, and first try at writing modern!human!AU. For unknown reasons (seriously, I'm not sure why it couldn't be Laurence, shut up), Excidium is driving Temeraire and Iskierka to the beach. >> It doesn't do everything I want it to, but fuck it, I'm sleepy and I couldn't get the words to go right on the SitR fic I was working on earlier.

Approximately five minutes after the old blue sedan pulled out of Laurence's driveway, a question came from the back seat. "Are we almost there?"

"That is a stupid thing to ask," came forth the response almost before the question's finish. Temeraire continued waspishly, "You know perfectly well that Blackpool is almost three hours' drive from here."

Excidium adjusted his rear-vision mirror slightly and caught a glimpse of his two passengers. Temeraire, the elder by a few years, and a year shy of his own driver's license, was a lanky mess of dark hair and frowns. Iskierka glared back in her seatmate's direction, golden eyes narrowed.

"It is not a stupid thing to ask," she said. She paused a moment before apparently seizing on another way to nettle the boy. "Why'd you bring a maths book with you to the beach?"

"Not everyone wants to spend all day goggling at the opposite sex," Temeraire replied haughtily, but the rustle of shifting objects suggested that the book had been stashed out of Iskierka's line of sight.

"No, some people just want to look smart in front of Perscitia." Her voice grew more and more sing-songy with every word, in that grating way teenaged girls excelled at.

"You are very unpleasant, Iskierka. I hope you're aware of this."

It was, of course, best to let them attempt to resolve their many conflicts on their own, tiresome though it was to listen to their squabbling. He tuned the car to Radio 4 and decided he would not call a ceasefire until they drowned out the news.
