Not done, sigh.

Forty minutes into baking a cake, Kay recalled exactly how much she detested baking. It was easy to forget under the right circumstances--today, Julius' birthday and the opportunity to make him a gift in addition to buying him one--but she always managed to come to the point when baking became nothing more than an avoidable chore. And, staring at the spilled flour on one counter, the drops of batter that had ended up on top of the stove, and all the bowls and spoons that now needed washing, she never wanted to make anything more than a sandwich in the kitchen again.

"Are you sure you don't want any help?" Julius called from the living room, the clackety-clack of the typewriter pausing.

"No," Kay replied, looking for a dish towel to wipe her hands on and realizing with dismay that she'd gotten powdery spots of flour all down the front of her navy blue dress. An apron, she told herself, you have to buy an apron. Even if you only use it once in a blue moon, it's less embarrassing than walking around polka-dotted. "It wouldn't be a surprise for you if you helped with it, Jules."

"I suppose not. Well, it smells divine in here, whatever you're making must be wonderful." She could hear him beginning to type again
