"Tharkay?" Martha asked, poking her head into her father's study. Before he could say anything in response, she made an oh! noise, and hurriedly knocked on the door of it.
"Yes, Martha?" he asked, hiding a smile. When he turned in his chair, away from his work, she came into the room and scrambled up onto his lap.
She didn't explain her presence right away, but Tharkay was quite willing to sit with her until she cared to. When she did speak, it was a question he had expected might come eventually. "Tharkay, should I be a vegetarian?"
Again resisting the urge to smile, this time at her stumbling attempt to say "vegetarian," Tharkay considered his answer. "I think you should be whatever kind of 'tarian you like."
He received a blank look, and then a "Tharkaaaaaaaaay!" in return.
"What I mean," Tharkay continued, kissing the top of her head, "is that you should eat what you think is right, whether or not that includes meat. Daddy and I will be happy with you either way."
She continued to frown. "I want to eat meat, only not if it hurts the animals."
