Archie's face grew no less inscrutable as they left the church, having bartered Sebastian's way into a christening, and he said little as they walked toward their car. William was content with the silence, knowing he was far more likely to put his foot in his mouth if he made an attempt to comfort Archie; far better to curl an arm around his waist and keep him close, and let the reminder of his nearness do what little it could.

For his part, Archie walked rather stiffly, and did not lean in towards William as he often did, until William was ready to give up. Thankfully, they were at the car at that point, and William had to walk around to the passenger side anyway.

"D'you mind if we don't go home yet?" Archie asked quietly, pulling onto the road. "Margie hasn't anything going on today, she won't mind watching Sebastian a bit longer."

"If you don't think she'd mind," said William. Hearing Sebastian's name, and knowing it was attached to a real child, one belonging to him, still felt queer, despite two months of waking up in the middle of the night to feed and change him. "Where do you want to go?"

Archie shrugged, as though he was not sure, and William did not believe him at all. Each time Archie made a turn, he did it decisively; if he did not know where he was going, it was only consciously. But he said nothing, and they rode in silence through the countryside, until they reached Galloway Forest Park.
