Unfinished. Can't focus. Grah.

That his mother was not having a good day, memory-wise, became evident the moment she caught Will's eye. The Lady Allendale sat, frail as a songbird, in a chair of rose-pink velvet and smiled as he and Tharkay entered her private parlour. "Hello," she said pleasantly, looking at them without any evident recognition. "Please sit down."

They did as told, on a loveseat to her right, and Will felt Tharkay's hand slip into his. It was an unspeakable comfort to Will, to feel him at his side, warm and reassuring. Clearing his throat, Will smiled as easily as he could (which was not very). "You look well today."

Still wearing the smile Will had seen countless times before at dinner parties, but only recently directed at him, she answered, "Thank you, Mr...?"

"Will," he said, trying to sound pleasant. "Please call me Will."

"And I am Tharkay."

She shook each of their hands in turn, instructing them to call her Emma and expressing her joy in meeting them. "Tharkay is a very nice name," she commented, after a moment. "Where is it from?"

"Tibet," Tharkay told her; Will envied his dispassionate tone, as easy as if he had not met her decades before but only just today. "That is where I am from originally."

"Well, isn't that nice!" Lady Allendale exclaimed. "And Will is a very nice name, too. My youngest boy is named Will; he'll be five this coming October. He wears his hair just as you do."
