So entirely shameless, so even more so poorly written. Set sometime relatively soon after Archie has a seizure in front of Sebastian. I imagine Sebastian likes "Bobby Shaftoe" a lot when he's little, but that is probably a bit pepperjack cheese-y on my part.
William headed towards Sebastian's bedroom, intent on getting him up from his nap, only to find that he'd been beaten to the punch. Arriving upstairs and hearing Sebastian's voice was nothing new; whenever Sebastian woke before his parents came upstairs, he had long and serious-sounding conversations with his stuffed animals. What caught William off-guard that afternoon was the sudden sound of Archie's laughter, presumably at some unheard comment of Sebastian's.
"Let's try again," William heard Archie say, all cheer. And a moment later, in a quiet voice, "Bobby Shaftoe's gone to sea--"
"Silver buckles on his knee!" Sebastian joined in, in the tuneless way small children had, his enthusiasm making up for any flaws a less biased judge might hear. William crept down the hall closer to the door to Sebastian's room, that he could look in from where he stood and see the two of them without being a disturbance.
They sat facing each other on Sebastian's bed, Archie's back to the bedroom door and all Sebastian's attention on his father's face. Archie tapped the beat out on Sebastian's knee, leaning in close and grinning broad as they reached the line "He'll come back and marry me."
There was no place here for William, not right now--that much was clear. He couldn't quite bring himself to remove himself entirely, not when he hadn't seen Archie grin like that in what felt like ages, and when Sebastian looked equally delighted. They'd both had a patchy few days, Archie growing withdrawn and Sebastian responding with worries and clinginess for William. His own barging in would only be an unwelcome distraction, clumsy and awkward when they were getting on so well at that moment.
And so he carefully drew back down the corridor as Archie began to sing another song, Sebastian joining in where he remembered the words. William couldn't help humming it himself as he headed back downstairs to the garage.
